A letter from T-Fans to Tecno

Hi Tecno,

I hope these greetings find you well.

We are proud to be associated with you. Being the leading Phone brand in Africa, we feel a sense of pride whenever we hook out our phones and use them.

Thank you for the fair-priced devices and also the HiOS. We have the best Cameras, best music players and the best specifications in the market.

However, in as much as we have these joys in our hearts, there are a few issues we would like to raise. If you have the concern and time, please listen.

Letter from t-fans to tecno

HiOS Updates
As a staunch follower of this Forum and other Social Media pages that you own, I have realized that people are having problems downloading and installing HiOS updates. Personally, my C9 would not download the updates and you said that we give you time to rectify.

I wonder how you could release an update without knowing if it would work with the target phone. People are still complaining all over the Forum over the same matter. Please release user-ready updates to reduce the agony and inconvenience.

We understand that the HiOS is still a new feature that is still undergoing testing. However, it has so many bugs that we wonder whether it was ready for consumption by the general public. The C9 and J8 have minimal bugs. For instance, mine kills the Facebook application without my consent. With other devices such as the L8 and C8, the bugs are so many. See for yourself in the Forum.

Please take your time to record the bugs and give us flawless OS. We are users but at this rate, we all feel like Beta Testers or developers.

New devices
The other concern that we have is that you release too many devices into the market. This is according to many users on Tecno Spot. I agree to the above because I had a C5. Before I could use it well, we had the C8. A few months later, the C9 was born. A few weeks later, we had the C7. At this rate, we are getting confused about which device to settle for.

Request: please allow time between the devices so we can fully enjoy them before the next one arrives. This will allow us time to enjoy them. Also, we will anxiously wait for the newer ones. Need I say that you risk saturating your market and losing value?

When you release the C9 King, everything was upgraded. Screen density, RAM, Processor, features, etc. However, you left out such a big feature which is taking away the reputation of the C9: Battery! We have a Tecno L8 which has minimal features but has a 5,000mAH battery. The C9 has a 3,000mAH one. It barely runs for 6 hours of internet or gaming.

What sense is there in having such a great device but always being afraid of using it because of the poor battery?

Similarly, the C8 freezes a lot upon installing the HiOS and tens of apps. Why upgrade a 1 GB RAM cellphone to Android 6 yet you know Android 6 requires at least 2GB of RAM?

Finally, I would like to ask about the C9. Mine is very genuine, but upon the use of internet or gaming even for 5 minutes, it heats up so badly. If you leave it to download stuff for 30 minutes, you cannot even touch the screen as it is extremely hot.

Does this only affect me?

Summarily, this is just a polite concern from us. This information is condensed from observations made in the forum. If you can, then listen to us. And do something. We are requesting for corrections to these issues rather than complaining and throwing tantrums.

We love being Tecno users.

Faithfully yours,

NB: Fellow fans, please freely agree or disagree to these claims. Also feel free to add any concerns that you may have towards improvement of our devices. We hope TECNO will listen to us.

Reasons why you must use an original phone charger

As you all know, phone warranties do not cover accessories such as earphones, USB cables, covers and batteries. This is because the mode of use by the purchaser can destroy them. Today, let me tell you about your most important accessory: the charger, plus why you must always use the original [Branded] charger.

But, first, let me tell you that there are already tens of cases of people who have been burned, hurt, and killed by phone chargers. Cases of house fires started by the same are also on the increase.

The following information will save your health, life, house and phone:

reasons to use original phone charger

Charger/Battery Power Rating

If you ever used a charger that takes too long to fill your battery or one that charges very fast, you might be using the wrong charger. This might spoil your battery, burn the charger or overheat and cause a fire.

When you buy a charger, check that it is rated exactly or slightly above the Voltage of your battery. In short, if your battery is rated 4.0 volts, find a charger that is rated 4V or 4.2V.
Secondly, check the output Amperage (mA). If your cell is rated 1,000mA, use a charger that is exact or above that rating. If you use one that is 900mA, the battery will only fill up to the 900mA and stop. That leads to overheating, slow charging and device failure.
Finally, check the recommended output (Volts). If say, your country’s household voltage is 100-240Volts, buy a charger that is rated WITHIN this range. If you buy a charger with a rating of 50-200Volts, it will burn up immediately you plug it in.

To save you this stress, just purchase an original charger!

USB charge vs. Wall charge
As you have seen with modern chargers, they come combined with a USB and charger. At times, you may lose the cable and have to borrow one. When you do, you might realize that your phone charges slowly and also discharges very fast.
The problem is that we have USB 1.0, USB 2.0 and now USB 3.0 cables. The 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 cables utilize 500mA, 900mA and 1500mA respectively. Therefore, if your cable was USB 3.0 and you start using a 2.0, then you will have to charge longer and your phone might never get charged fully. Similarly, if you had a 1.0 and start using the 3.0, you risk spoiling your battery by exceeding its rating.

To save you this stress, just purchase an original charger!!

When you buy a Tecno charger, just know that is usually tested and certified by bodies such as MFI, RHOS and CE. Check and see. Your Tecno charger is branded with CE on one side.
If you buy an uncertified charger, you risk having loose wires, poor quality components, no fuse, no regulator, poor transformer plus many other dangerous faults. These can cause your battery to spoil, burn or explode. They can even damage your phone! However, when you purchase an original charger, you are rest assured that the quality is right and you live in no danger.

To save you this stress, just purchase an original charger!!!
To be safe:
  • Use the original charger that you bought with your gadget.
  • If it spoils or get lost, buy an original one from a branded seller.
  • Check your cell ratings before borrowing a charger from someone.
  • Carry your USB/charger whenever you can. That is what works best for your cellphone.
  • Realize that cheap chargers mean they are missing something like certification. Do not buy cheap, unbranded chargers!
  • If you purchase an unoriginal charger, make sure all its rating match those of your original charger.

Bonus Tip:
Some people say that if you charge your phone too long after it hits 100%, it will spoil. The truth is that it cannot spoil it! Our modern phones are so intelligent that they stop taking power when they get fully charged.
As such, there is no harm. However, your charger’s life might reduce since it remains plugged in and all its components are working.
Therefore, be a good owner: Unplug your charger from the power socket when it’s not in use. That guy wants to rest as well, OK?

please share this yo help others out there, we entertain comments too.

Recover / Get back your impotant files from a corrupt sd card or flash - Full guide

I bet you must have asked your self, is it possible to recover data from a damagedcorrupt, locked Micro Sd card without actually formating it? Well, its your lucky day because the answer is YES!  its very possible and also easy! Don't try to format the drive yet.
Recover data from corrupt usb drives, memory card without actually formating it

Some of the reasons why data or files in a memory card or external storage drive sometimes gets corrupteddamaged,inaccessible/not detected might be because it was abnormally removed during usage, dropped, formated or partitioned wrongly, virus infections, and a whole lot more.

Recover data from corrupt usb drives, memory card without actually formating it

A friend was playing songs on her Nokia C3, the battery was very low and suddenly it went off. After charging it, she couldnt find the memory card in the gallery and all her stuffs disappeared. Connecting the SDcard to a PC didn't help because it asked to format it(Sd card) and sometimes the formating will fail.

I have been in that dreadful shoe before. My 16GB SDHC memory card got completely damaged. My phone was showing damaged sdcard, please format. When I tried to format it using the phone, it would show formating failed.
I even tried accessing and formatting the memory card using other android devices and even symbian, china and lumia phones but to no avail.

Thinking the PC will solve it, I connected it to the Pc via a USB card reader, but immediately my computer said the disk can't be used unless its formated. I was like

What! What about my personal files, music, photos, videos and other datas on the memory card?

Then the solution came up because I couldn't afford to loose the contents on the memory card. I guess you wouldn't want to do the same.

Now if you have a memory card that is damaged, doesn't show up or get recognised in your phone, requesting for formating before it can be used, locked, hidden contents, showing errors, corrupted files and you wouldn't want to loose them by formating the memory card, please read on.

  • The drives on your Pc and other external drives will be displayed. Select the one that has the issue and click on the arrow button at the bottom right.

  • Remo Recover will start searching for lost partitions in your drive(memory card or hard disk, flashdrive etc)

  • After a while it will display a list of the drives or partitions it found.

  • Select the one that matches yours and then click the forward arrow at the bottom right ➡
  • Select OK on the prompt that says perform an additional scan for specific file types.

  • Manually select the file types you wish to recover or select Mark All to recover everything on the corrupted memory card. Click the forward arrow ➡ to proceed.
  • It will take a while to search all the music, photos and videos plus other files depending on the size.

  • After finding the lost data, click OK on the prompt that displays.

Files recovered are in the folder icon while additional files are in the other folder icon with a red X.

  • Manually select the files you wish to save or select Mark All if you want to save every thing from the bad memory card.
  • Click Yes on the Save recovery session prompt.

  • Now click on the output folder and select any folder or create a new folder where you want the recovered files to be saved. Click Ok.

  • The recovery process will begin and will take a while depending on the size of the recovered files. Please donot interrupt it.

  • After the media files and other data have been saved, just goto the folder you selected and you will see all of your files gladly waiting for you.

From my experience, I discovered that most cables are able to twist and break while kept untouched in the bag or when used roughly. After going through my share of expensive cables with self-destructing powers, I became extremely careful of how I stored and used them. Yet, I still managed to bust these cables every few months.

And then I realized this simple trick using the spring from old ballpoint pen as support to my weak charger cables and headphones to give them more life and prevents it from bending.

How is it done?

How to prevent your charger or headphones from bending too much and breaking

▪Just grab the spring out from any of your old ballpoint pen

▪Then stretch it and wrap it around the part of the cord that tends to bend, and it’lll keep it straight forever

▪This will stop it from wearing down over years.

When you have everything ready, connect the USB data cable to one of the phones. Connect the USB OTG host cable to the other phone. And finally attach the two cables together. You will notice that the phone with smaller charge level has started to charge. The charging will continue until the batteries of both the phones has almost the same level of charge.

2. Super-fast Files Transfer Between Two Devices
When it comes to Android files transfer, lots will choose the commonly used way, Bluetooth, NFC, USB cable and PC for example. Nonetheless, when using these methods, connection issues always occur. And transmission is quite slow. So, in today's guide, a new solution – USB OTG will be introduced.

USB OTG, empowers USB devices like Android phones to act as a host and then allows other USB device to be attached to them. You can make direct connection between two Android phones/tablets and transfer files between Android via USB OTG. By using USB OTG, Android phones plugged-in can communicate with each other without the need to be connected to a computer. When it's come to transferring heavy files like game data and HD movies, using an OTG cable is the best way to get it done with a fastest way.

4. Using an External GamePad
Playing games on a touchscreen is not the same as holding a real Gamepad or a portable console like PSP. Many game developers have finally realized that in order for their games to be successful, they have to support Android. To really win Android users over, they should also accommodate us hardcore gamers who have OTG cables with the ability to hook up controllers to our devices.Games like Dead Trigger and Asphalt already support Gamepads, but many others are still touch only.

Some will only work well with touchscreen input, like Blek, but action games like FIFA 15, Modern Combat 4 and Shadow Gun can definitely benefit from an external Gamepad. If you have a tablet, you can try connecting your Gamepad with your device using your OTG cable.

5. Connect USB Flash Drive to Your Android Device
Flash drives spent a good amount of time as the number one way to take your files with you wherever you needed to go. As some of that has changed with Android devices and cloud storage, many of us still have those USB flash drives kicking around looking for a good use.

USB Flash drive is not meant for your computer alone, you can use it with your Android device as long as you have your OTG cable with you. It’s plug and play with no settings needed. Think about the possibilities: watching movies from your flash drive, moving files around, reading documents stored on USB Flash etc.

6. Connection of a Mouse to Your Android Device
When a USB mouse is connected to your Android Device using a USB OTG cable, a mouse pointer appears on the screen. Click to select and open items on the screen.

How To Block Ads In Android Apps, Games And Browsers

Ads are a necessary evil, Thats why blocking these ads in android apps, games and browsers has become a necessity too. Many websites and applications are providing you with free service, free content and free software because someone else is paying them to keep them up. Thus, the service provider has to serve ads to you in return for the income that is keeping them in business, and in development. As the user, you reap the benefit of using the product for free.
However, sometimes the ad placements can be really annoying, contributing to not-so-appealing user experience. In this post we will look at methods to block ads from showing up on Android. You can block ads from appearing in apps and games, or only on browsers. The methods here may work for both rooted and non-rooted devices. It will be specified for each method. Before we begin, you need a File Manager, e.g. Astro File Manager. Any other file manager will work fine.
Disclaimer: Attempt ad-blocking at your own risk. We cannot be held responsible for any effects on your device resulting from these methods.

1. Adblock Plus (ABP)

This method uses ad-blockers (apps) to block all ads in your device, including the ads shown in various apps and games. There are many ad-blockers for Android, thanks to the ever-growing Android developers. The top two would be Adblock Plus (ABP) and AdAway; we wil discuss the former, but you can install AdAway if that’s your preference.

Using Adblock Plus

We’re going with Adblock Plus as it is anopen source project and has the option to allow non-intrusive ads. This method works for both rooted and non-rooted devices. Installing an ad-blocker app requires your device to allow applications from unknown sources.
Sideloading is required as Google has removed ad-block apps from Google playstore. You need to sideload any ad-blocker, i.e. install ad-blockers using its APK file and not from GoogleStore.
Follow the given steps to set this configuration:
  1. Go to Settings > Applications (orSecurity on 4.0 and above) on your Android device.
  2. Navigate to the Unknown sourcesoption.
  3. If unchecked, tap the checkbox, and then tap OK on the confirmation popup.
Your android device is ready to install ad-blockers.

Installing And Configuring Adblock Plus

1. Open a browser in your device and download Adblock Plus for Android. Your device will receive the APK file:adblockplusandroid-version.apk.
2. Navigate to where your downloaded files are kept, then tap on the file and install. (If you open the APK file using a file manager, select Open App Manager and then click on Install.)
3.1 On rooted devices: after installing, open Adblock Plus. It will request for super user permissions. Allow super user permissions to Adblock Plus and you are good to go.
3.2 On non-rooted devices: you need a few more steps, to manually set up proxy in your Android. You will need to follow the instructions here as instructions are different for Android versionsup to 3.1 and 4.0+.s
Now Adblock Plus will start blocking ads. You can set more options in Adblock Plus like ads filter lists, non-intrusive ads, etc inSettings.

Adblock Plus – Browser Extension

Adblock Plus is also available as a browser extension for Firefox. With this method, only the ads shown on web pages inside the browser are blocked. Ads in apps or games are not affected. This method works for rooted as well as non-rooted device.

Setting Up Adblock Plus (Extension)

1. If you are not using Firefox as a browser on your Android yet, get it here. Run the browser on your device and go to the Adblock Plus add-on here. Add it to Firefox and Install it.
2. Restart Firefox and browse ad-free. You can set more options in Adblock Plus by going to the Menu > Adblock Plus and going through the options you can configure.

Must read: Effective ways to prevent your phone from virus attacks

2. Block Ads using ‘hosts’ file

This method uses ‘hosts’ file to block ads. This method blocks all ads in your device, including the ones shown in various apps and games. This method works only for rooted devices.

What is a ‘hosts’ file?

‘hosts’ file is a plain-text file in an operating system to map hostnames (like to its IP address. Whenever you try to launch a website using its hostname, the operating system will usually search the ‘hosts’ file to find the corresponding IP address first.
If the search is successful, then its mapped IP address is used; otherwise a query is sent to DNS (Domain Name service) to find the IP address of that hostname.

Setting Up ‘hosts’ file

1. On the computer, open MVPS ( or on your browser. A plain-text page will open. Save this page as the name hosts in the computer.

2. Using Bluetooth or a usb connection, copy this hosts file from your computer to your Android device. Note the file path.
3. On your Android, open the file manager in your device and copy the hosts file to /etcor /system/etc. Accessing this location may require you to ‘allow super userpermissions’ to the file manager.

4. Rename the original hosts file (if present) to a .txt or .bak extension. Paste the savedhosts file here. Reboot your phoneand your Android is now ad-free.

Wrap Up

Although ads are annoying, they are also a great way to try out new apps, products or sites. Allowing non-intrusive ads is a way to be exposed to these new and sometimes great apps via ads. Alternatively many apps offers you the option to buy an ad-free version of the app, so you can support your favorite apps without being annoyed by the ads.
